Caffenol Photography

On my journey to get back to the foundation of photography I decided to take on the challenge to be able to develop film in the field. I mean literally a field. I have had to think about what chemicals to use and how to travel with them. Whether by car, boat, plane, bicycle, or even by foot each method has its difficulties. I have been able to narrow it down to the minimum equipment needed to take the pitures, now I am refining the development process. That's where caffenol comes into play....

My Recipe

12 oz. Water
5 teaspoons of instant coffee crystals
3 1/2 teaspoons washing soda
1/2 teaspoon vitamin C powder

Mix the coffee and vitamin C in 6oz of water, mix the washing soda in another 6oz of water. Stir both containers until they are completely disolved then combine the two mixtures together. The developer is now ready but be warned this has a really bad smell.

I just use water for the stop bath (3 flushes with 6 agitations) then a Kodak black and white fixer (5 minutes, 3 agitations per minute).
Hang and dry the film then you're done!
